Read Across America Celebrated at Aeolian March 1, 2013

March 1, 2013 the Aeolian Community came together to celebrate two things: the birthday of Dr. Seuss and our love for reading!! In their pajamas, the day started with Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast in the cafeteria followed by an assembly where students received Principal's Awards from Mrs. Speh for being Super Readers or Improving in Reading. First grade teacher, Mrs. Martinez, read "The Cat in the Hat" and we had a surprise visit from the Cat himself along with the irresponsible mess makers Thing 1 and Thing 2. They sprayed the students with silly string and threw streamers. The Aeolian students had a blast!

The day continued with a Community Read Aloud where we had over 60 guest readers, including Aeolian Parents, Long Beach college students, PIH doctors, SCE employees, Kiwanis members, THINK Together employees, LNSD Board Members, LNSD District office employees, LNMS counselors, and many more. The students listened to many readers throughout the day. The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 also visited the classrooms throughout the day causing a ruckus.

At lunch time, our annual Family Picnic took place in the Rose Garden. Over 100 parents joined their child for lunch, music, reading, face painting, and fun! The Cat in the Hat hung out at the picnic saying HI to all of the kids.

The day ended with the announcement of the door decorating contest classroom winners! Every classroom did a great job decorating their doors in celebration of reading. With different themes connected to different Dr. Seuss books the students were able to express themselves through writing and art. Great job everyone!!

Each child received a Dr. Seuss book mark at the end of the day from Principal Speh. We can't wait to do it all again next year!!
