On February 2, 2013, the Los Nietos School District community came together in a fundraising effort to support Valentin and Marisol Medina who lost their two boys tragically in a car accident on December 21, 2012. The Los Nietos School Board of Trustees made it a priority to find a way to help support the Medina Family. All four schools donated time, resources, and items to raffle for the District sponsored Pancake Breakfast held at the Los Nietos Middle School. A particularly touching moment came when the Aeolian Student Council presented Marisol Medina a check for over $600.00 that they had collected through student fundraising efforts at Aeolian School.
In addition to the Los Nietos School District staff, that volunteered and brought their families to the event, many former Los Nietos alumni also attended. Superintendent Vasquez welcomed Assembly member, Tony Mendoza and his wife, and thanked him for attending and supporting the Los Nietos School District.
The event raised $11,000.00 that will be donated to the trust that was set-up in the names of the two boys. In addition to the staff and parent organizations from all four schools that helped on Saturday, there were many community organizations that made donations and contributed to the success of the fundraising event. Los Nietos Food Services Director, Kurt Chou, is to be commended for his coordination and preparation of the Pancake Breakfast along with food services workers from all four schools. The people in attendance remarked consistently how wonderful the food tasted and how full they felt after eating their breakfast.
The Los Nietos School District would like to thank Richard Ruby and Martha Martinez from McDonalds (who donated condiments and utensils), Greg Wunsch, from Newport Farms (pancake mix and sausage patties), Wayne Prins, from Clearbrook Farms (milk and Juice), Lindsey Inechien, from P & R Paper (plates), Peter Heimark, President of Triangle Distributing, and Susan Sanzone, Corporate Social Responsibility Director from Triangle Distributing, (bottled water). When the local company’s heard that the District was organizing a fundraiser to support the family, they eagerly stepped forward to offer support.
Superintendent Vasquez on behalf of Marisol and Valentin Medina would like to thank all members of the Los Nietos Community for coming out on Saturday to support the Medina Family in their time of need. The event showcased yet again that the Los Nietos School District Community is a special community that cares not only about academics, but cares about the students and their families as well.
